Sifu Russell Benham
Head Instructor WCKUK Wimbledon

Hi, my name is Russell Benham and I’m the head instructor for WCK UK Wimbledon.

I have studied Martial Arts from the age of 15, and have trained with numerous martial arts professionals from different martial backgrounds throughout the years. Today I continue to train Wing Chun with the WCK UK Chief Instructor Sifu Wes Hussey. I started my training Wing Chun in late November 2000, coming from a kickboxing/boxing background I wanted to find a more internal system that produced devastating results, right from the beginning I could appreciate the directness of Wing Chun.

I started to teach Wing Chun to concrete what I had absorbed as a student and to pass on what I had learnt, to think that one day what I had taught them could possibly save their life! Teaching Wing Chun for me has become a way of life, to pass the art onto others has given me great pleasure, watching the student understand and apply a technique for the first time and gain complete control of the situation is priceless and always brings a smile to my face. Being part of WCK UK Organisation has allowed me to grow as an instructor and as a student, being able to pass the growth on to the students, watching people from all walks of life training together and moving well. Each one of the WCK UK instructors has at least 10 years Wing Chun behind them so you can be sure you’ll be learning quality Wing Chun Kung Fu.

As well as training Wing Chun I also train strength and conditioning, which includes kettlebells and bodyweight training. Since training Wing Chun there isn’t a day that doesn’t go by that I’m not surprised what the human body is actually capable of, it's got me hooked!

I look forward to seeing you in one of my classes.

I’ve been training with Sifu Russell Benham since November 2015. I’m currently studying/training for my 12th student grade. I previously trained 15 years ago under another Wing Chun school for a couple of years.

From the 1st lesson and grade to now, I have enjoyed the training and support Wimbledon Wing Chun and my fellow students have offered. We are fortunate to have a mix of experience from beginners to more advanced and seniors in our class where we are always learning in an inclusive forward thinking environment.

We work hard with a lot of laughs along the way. It’s a class for people of all abilities to join and progress.

Growing up in the late 70’s and ’80s fed on a diet of Kung Fu films and Bruce Lee fights, I had always wanted to learn a martial art, it just took me until my late 20s to finally pluck up the courage and the oomph to start!

I decided there and then that Wing Chun was what I wanted to learn and now some 15 years later it is without a doubt one of the best decisions I have ever made. It is a fascinating, clever and dynamic system that uses the body's own mechanics to defend oneself directly and efficiently, perfect I feel for modern day self-defence.

Of course, knowing what system you want to learn is one thing but finding the right Sifu to teach it is another! This is where I count myself very lucky to have spent 12 of those 15 years as a student of Sifu Russell Benham and to have been a part of WCKUK.

If you want to try a new martial art in a fantastic environment, with friendly people and an excellent Sifu then come along and see for yourself, it might be one of the best decisions you ever make too!

I have been training under Sifu Russell Benham at Wimbledon Wing Chun since November 2015 and before that since 2005.

Although I had previously trained Wing Chun, I opted to start the WCKUK system from grade 1 and am now currently completing grade 12.

As well as Martial/Fighting Arts, I have spent over 20 years doing weight/fitness training and am an avid road cyclist, enjoying riding the Surrey Hills & surrounding areas.

The Wimbledon Wing Chun classes are always fun and properly structured, designed for students of all skill levels, yet undertaken with the proper disciplines you would expect to find in a traditional Wing Chun school.

The whole club is like one big family and we are extremely lucky to have not only a 7th Level Master in Sifu Russell Benham, but also 2x 5th Level Practitioners in Wes Ash & Sifu Steve Dare, that give all the students access to an unprecedented amount of Wing Chun knowledge and wisdom.

I can sincerely say that training WCKUK Wing Chun offers you a real sense of focus, confidence, security and well being while also teaching you the skills needed to help deal with any potential unpleasant situations that may arise whilst out with your family and loved ones in this (sometimes unfortunately volatile) modern society we live in.

Like a lot of people, my passion for martial arts was ignited by Bruce Lee and as a small boy in the 70's in the thick of the 'Kung Fu' boom, I became fascinated with the Martial Arts!

A number of years later I began training in Chinese kickboxing & after that Tae Kwon Do both of which I gained the coveted Black belt. During my Tae Kwon do days I entered a numerous amount of tournaments with a fair amount of success!

I began my Wing Chun journey around 2004 and was immediately hooked!

The more I learned the more I came to realise that Wing Chun is a practical Martial Art for people of all ages.

A great martial art based on principles, simple & effective! After gaining the WCKUK Wing Chun 4th Technician Grade I felt the time was right to start teaching. Time to give something back after the decades of Martial arts training I have put in!

Within the WCK UK Organisation nothing is held back, no secrets.

With a bit of dedication, hard work and a lot of fun, I am confident as a teacher, you will get to where you want to be in your Wing Chun journey!
