Having always wanted to learn a martial art I decided around 6 years ago to finally do it and spent some time looking at various styles and when I finally saw a demonstration of Wing Chun I decided there and then that was the style I wanted to learn. I found it fascinating, a really clever, dynamic system that uses the body’s own mechanics to defend oneself directly and efficiently, perfect I feel for modern day self defence.

I spent three years with a school learning the basics and though I enjoyed it I found my progression had stalled and I was stagnating, I seemed to be going through the motions over and over but not learning the meaning behind them and how to actually apply them. That was several years ago and having left that school I was extremely lucky to be taken on as a student of Sifu Russ who has re-ignited my passion for Wing Chun.

Not only is he genuinely a very friendly and caring instructor, he lives for his Kung Fu and is a natural teacher which is apparent in everything he does. He is dedicated to a point I strive to emulate and is so knowledgeable and passionate about his Kung Fu I couldn’t imagine being taught by anyone else…in fact as us students like to joke it is like having our very own Neo out of the Matrix!

Anyway, all I can say to anyone considering learning a martial art, I wholeheartedly recommend they come to WCK UK Wimbledon to see what it is that got me hooked, the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and yet you will learn an excellent form of self defence from a great Sifu.

Every class I have been a part of has always been informative, structured well and most importantly FUN…there is always a fantastic atmosphere! Since my training began I have developed some essential skills that I didn’t know I had, not just in Wing Chun but within myself…..but only when you train can you find out what it is that you have inside you!!

I have now been training with Sifu Russ for the past 5 years and can safely that I would not change my instructor for anything and am looking forward to the next 10 years!

I have trained Wing Chun for many years now – and changed teachers because I was not confident in their abilities. Since training at Wimbledon Wing Chun I have been very fortunate to be taught by Sifu Russell Benham. I trained with Sifu Russell many years ago – he was an advanced student and I was a beginner, even then he always excelled within the system due to his efficiency, determination and passion. When I was looking for a new teacher and I found out that Sifu Russell had opened a school under the excellent WCKUK Organisation, I jumped at the opportunity to learn from a ‘TRUE’ martial artist.

From my experience it is very difficult to find a credible Wing Chun teacher these days – one whom is modest, honest and proficient. In fact, too many self proclaimed Wing Chun ‘masters/practitioners’ (whichever they call it) claim that they have studied and ‘mastered’ the system, but unfortunately they all seem to just merely emulate it’s effect.

Sifu Russell is different, he has an understanding of the system and he is extremely proficient. He is a great teacher as he has a methodical way of teaching his students, but more importantly he adapts his teachings to the individuals needs and requirements. If you are looking for a competent and experienced teacher please get in contact with Sifu Russell Benham – I highly recommend him. It is very easy to stay with your teacher because you are comfortable; ask yourselves this, are you completely confident in your teachers ability and your ability to execute the system if necessary?

Don’t be afraid to move if you need to, Sifu Russell will not judge or undermine you – he will teach you the purest form of Wing Chun and teach you a system that works. He doesn’t make any bogus claims, he will never hold anything from you or exploit you for money – but what he will do is teach you is that through hard work, determination and commitment you will achieve excellence. We all learn martial arts for many different reasons, my main reason was to build my confidence and to be confident enough to use it if necessary. I have actually had to use my Wing Chun once in a hostile situation (while under Sifu Russ’s tuition) and felt extremely comfortable and confident with my ability to defend myself – had I learned from another instructor (like my last teacher) I don’t think I would have felt as confident.

I’ve been a student of the Wing Chun system for about 6 years and have enjoyed every moment of it. For me it’s not a hobby, it’s a skill which I earned and is now a big part of my life, it’s changed the way I think and act in certain situations.

Over the years I’ve also felt myself grow as a person and become more confident in myself and have found a big appetite for training.

I first met Sifu Russ when I started my training, in which I trained with him for a short period, it was only 2 years ago when I found Russ was opening I school I made a decision to ask him to be my Sifu, and I haven’t looked back since.

Training with Sifu Russ is, in my opinion the most informative training I have received and I always leave wanting more. His classes are well thought out, and the students who train with him are fantastic people and always make new students feel welcome.

He is a great teacher, full of information and very willing to share his knowledge of the Wing Chun system and does so with great passion. I would urge anyone to train under him as I’m sure they’ll receive some of the best training.

He is very much someone I aspire to and have a great deal of respect for. And I’m very appreciative of being able to be part of WCK UK South West London.

2004 I first met Sifu Russell Benham; he was an instructor at a school in Croydon where I began learning Wing Chun. My first ever lesson I had the opportunity to touch hands with him and from that moment I was like WOW….this guy is serious….he is the type of martial artist I am trying to model myself around as well trying to find out who I am.

Even though I learnt alot from training many different people (which I recommend) I firmly believe that I would not be where I am without the guidance of Sifu Russ, he is a most humble person with a great attitude and desire for what he does along with a great understanding of the system holding nothing back from any of his lessons, he has helped me personally through some tough and frustrating times and has always found means and ways to get the best out of me.

Every class I have been a part of has always been informative, structured well and most importantly FUN…there is always a fantastic atmosphere!

Having not ever practiced a martial art before I really didn’t know what to expect. When I first joined I was welcomed by Sifu Russ and a great bunch of his students. I quickly learned just how skilful the martial art is but Sifu Russ makes it very easy and fun to learn, tailoring the training to each individuals needs.

Over the last year I’ve learned a lot of new skills and gained lots of confidence. It’s been a real pleasure to be taught by such an experienced and knowledgable instructor and look forward to all that’s yet to come!

Wing Chun has to be the most amazing thing I’ve ever decided to dedicated my time to. It’s such a beautiful yet a powerful style of Kung fu and Sifu Russ has taught us that with simplicity and the correct technique you could, if you had to, cause serious damage to an attacker! Sifu Russ’s broad knowledge and understanding of true Wing Chun is endless.

As a teacher, he is patient and encouraging and will always take the time to break things down and show you the importance of each step. Each class is exciting and we all leave buzzin at the end of it! When first joining back in June last year.

I was worried that being a female would be a draw back as I could be weaker than the guys and get hurt… but I quickly learnt that when you diminish strength and fear and simply apply the correct form and technique that this is not the case! (It’s been very satisfying to prove when flooring/launching one of the boys!) :)

As well as the group sessions, private one-to-one sessions has helped me improve and excel quicker. For me learning Wing Chun has given me great confidence to be able to protect and defend myself, if I should ever get into a bad situation. I highly recommend Sifu Russell Benham.

Sifu Russ has been teaching me Wing Chun for about 5 months now, and I can honestly say you could not meet a man with more passion for his students. Every single week Sifu Russ seems to provide a lesson that sends you away feeling proud of the steps YOU have taken to become a better martial artist.

When ever you don’t fully understand something Sifu will always take the necessary time to help you along your way. Because Sifu Russ has so much passion and so much skill in Wing Chun it really is a no brainier who I will always go to for my training.

I was very warmly welcomed when I first joined Russell’s Kung-Fu classes at the start of this year, which I very much appreciated because I was nervous going alone. I haven’t looked back since! My motivation for joining was to: learn a new skill set; develop my sense of personal safety, and find a place where I could just escape all of life’s dramas for one hour. I can honestly say all boxes have been ticked! The classes are never easy, which helps keep me focused.

Sifu Russell and his group of technicians are very patient, friendly and very skilled at what they do. Sifu Russell sets a very focused but fun atmosphere which makes the classes enjoyable too. I think the best thing for me about the classes is that Sifu Russell sets realistic goals and celebrates all forms of progress which makes me feel motivated to improve. Sifu Russell is just generally a good egg with a real enthusiasm and talent for the art which makes him a great teacher. The class is full of just ‘good eggs’ who enjoy what they do and I’d recommend anyone who is having second thoughts about joining to come along and experience it themselves.

Two important factors for me were to find a highly skilled teacher, and a friendly training environment. I went to a free session at Wimbledon Wing Chun and immediately felt very welcomed. I was really impressed with the way Sifu Russell explained the basic concepts. All I can say is that I am now proudly, Student Grade 3!

Classes are something I look forward to! Sifu Russell is passionate about Wing Chun. His ability to teach is exceptional. To be taught by him is indeed a great privilege.

Since starting my training in Wing Chun almost a year ago, I have enjoyed immensely the teaching and training that Sifu Russ has provided within his weekly classes. When teaching new techniques and methods, his approach is well explained, clearly demonstrated and enthusiastic, and I go away from each session knowing more and feeling more confident and excited about my own Wing Chun.

The class Sifu Russ runs is friendly and mixed in terms of ability, and there are many points to share different learning experiences with the other students. There is also an abundance of technician level students who are keen to help teach and support the less experienced members of the class.

Starting as an absolute beginner, Sifu Russ has helped build my understanding of the martial art at a pace that was comfortable and interesting to me, and I can see that he takes a personal interest in each and every one of his students progress and tailors the pace of their own learning. I am looking forward to more opportunities to learn from such a committed and talented tutor.

Sifu Russell’s classes are relaxed and informative, I really felt like I was getting the basic concepts explained well as we moved through some basic combinations in the class. Really good teacher, and a great martial arts style to get to know.

Wing Chun to me is an excellent way to learn how to defend yourself. I have always been aware that the majority of individuals do not plan or like to think they would ever be in a situation, in which some form of danger would require them to act in aid of defending
themselves. However, the current world we live in sometimes causes us to consider our protection in more ways than we think.

The beauty of Wing Chun for me as an art was how I have been taught with no prior experience how to protect myself in the most intuitive way. Using my body’s movements and positioning to ensure I am always attacking and eliminating my threat as soon as
possible and in the most efficient manner.”

Working in a class full of so many different people who have different careers, ages and sex. I never imagined it being such a welcoming kind and energetic environment. Each classmate’s consideration for each other to me is outstanding. Senior classmates show such
patience and care when helping beginners and their dedication to the art is evident from the start.

Approaching the end of my first year it also works the opposite way where new students are welcomed with open arms and are able to learn so much from senior students.

There is no discrimination on error or making mistakes in Wing Chun Wimbledon from experienced to beginner everyone is learning and helping and always smiling when doing so. Being such a fun dynamic place to spend your time and learning one of the most
sophisticated martial systems I have ever come across, I still wonder why I didn’t start sooner.

Sifu Russell Benham teaching methods are also second to none with how the information is broadcasted to us in a clear and concise manner which is understandable to all. A fantastic skill attempting to teach the same skill to such a large variety of experienced,
intermediate and beginner students highly recommend anyone considering Wing Chun as a martial arts to come along and see it for themselves.
